My journey began with abstract painting in my early years. While studying abroad in New York in 1996, I began experimenting with audience interactivity and exploring the realms of conceptual art, installation art, and performance art.
Today, I am committed to the development of digital art and interdisciplinary creations. My goal is to advocate an inclusive view of our world, to cultivate an atmosphere of social acceptance, and to embrace and promote the understanding of differences and similarities between cultures. I engage with the idea of a flexible world in contemporary life by collaborating with artists from various different countries, cultural backgrounds, and artistic disciplines. In parallel, I have integrated my ideology in my personal works by creating multidisciplinary performance art.
In order to preserve the artistic integrity of my creations, I have held many of my installations and performance pieces in alternative art spaces such as Huashan 1914 Creative Park, SLY Art Space, Nanhai Art Gallery, etc.
Our understanding of the world is governed by our perceptions of differences: inside and outside, light and dark, good and bad, male and female, etc. But trying to understand the complexities of life using such rigid dualities can be limiting, confusing, and even harmful.
In reality, there are infinite ways to interpret our surroundings, and there are countless possible answers to every question. In my art, I explore conflicts between international cultures and seek to find liminal spaces in contemporary life. We need to search for the power of rebirth, renewed spirits. This is the core idea of my creative methodology.
Inspired by this concept of in-betweenness, I formed a group called 『Jellyfish Bloc』in 2002. I am inspired by the jellyfish’s qualities of transparency, fluidity, beauty, and danger. As a collective, we are driven by our vision of synthesizing the various creative elements—such as conceptualism, installation, drama, sound, video, movement, and interaction—into a unique, harmonious art form.
Additionally, I am focusing on the relationship between space and action. Challenging conventions of ritual between humans and specific environments, I seek to liberate performance from the confines of the theatrical stage and bring action into living spaces.
Aim: Explore the interrelationship of in-between cultures
My interest in the amalgamation of cultures is to develop a new creative method by drawing upon different ideologies of media. However, it is not only a means of inventing a new artistic expression; it also holds the potential to inform new systems of thought in contemporary society. Fulfilling such creation can inform contemporary life with special views, blurring boundaries and eliminating gaps between different cultures in a stride towards globalization. This integration can stimulate a re-evaluation of social cultures and inspire acceptance and appreciation for the differences and similarities they share.
Modernism dominates our life and presents new threats to our well-being. So many today are plagued with worry, whether the cause is losing a job, the perils of capitalism, or fear of environmental destruction. How do we control our lives? Is your life oriented towards welfare? How do you locate your life? Do you know where you are? Do you know where you’re going? And what is your hope? Everyone needs hope to move further. Hope keeps us moving toward a new future.
